Women in Construction: Navigating Pregnancy and a Career

As a tradie, being pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t make valuable contributions to your organisation. Sometimes, the hardest part is starting the conversation, especially when it’s about a topic or situation that’s not commonly encountered and might be uncomfortable or received negatively.

Starting the conversation with your employer about your pregnancy can be daunting. While you don’t have to notify them immediately, it’s recommended to do so for health and safety reasons. This is a great opportunity to discuss any restrictions your pregnancy might impose on your role with both your employer and your doctor. Together, you can explore the best options for managing your role throughout the different stages of your pregnancy.

Construction sites are filled with hazards that can be harmful to you and your unborn child. You have a duty to take reasonable care of your own health and safety.

Under Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination laws, it’s unlawful for your employer to discriminate against you because of your pregnancy. The Fair Work Act outlines specific standards for pregnant employees, including unpaid parental leave and the right to request flexible work arrangements.
