As the summer months approach, it’s crucial for everyone to practice sun safety. This is especially vital for outdoor workers, who can receive up to ten times more UV radiation than indoor workers, according to the Cancer Council.
To protect yourself, the Cancer Council recommends the following sun-smart practises:
- Plan your day: Whenever possible, schedule tasks to be done indoors or in the shade. Take breaks in shaded areas, particularly during midday when UV levels peak.
- Gear up: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to shield yourself from the sun. This includes:
- A long-sleeved shirt with a collar and long pants
- A broad-brimmed hat or a hardhat with a brim attachment
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses or safety glasses that meet Australian standards
Did you know? Even on cool or overcast days, UV radiation can be high. It’s essential to take protective measures year-round, not just on sunny or warm days. Additionally, staying hydrated while working outdoors is crucial, especially during hot weather. Here are some tips to ensure you stay hydrated:
- Keep water handy: Carry water in a reusable bottle while working outdoors for easy access.
- Sip regularly: Have small drinks of water frequently rather than waiting until you feel thirsty.
By following these guidelines, you can help ensure your safety and well-being while working outdoors.
