Some sources say it was at seven, while others say it was at 10. The fact is that Pablo Picasso started training in drawing and oil painting quite early for two reasons:
- He showed a passion and skill for art from a very young age
- His father, José Ruiz Blasco, was a professor of drawing and became his first mentor.
However, while training with his father, Picasso wasn’t a fan of traditional schools.
“Pablo didn’t like school very much. He was bored and did not concentrate. The little Malagasy boy screamed every morning when the maid took him to school. In class, he spent his time drawing and cutting out figures from paper,” said The Musée National Picasso Paris.
It changed when he was about to turn 14. He eventually found training that aligned with his passion, he entered the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, beginning his formal academic training. The rest is history!
Pablo Picasso built an impressive and famous body of work as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist, and stage designer.
He became one of the 20th century’s GOATs (Greatest Of All Time), co-creating Cubism with Georges Braque.
