How to Navigate Stress and Foster a Supportive Work Environment?

While you can’t always avoid stress, you can learn to manage it and protect yourself from its negative impacts. This is what we refer to as resilience.

“Psychologists Felicity and Kevin Baker, along with Jo Burrell in 2021, define resilience as a set of mental processes and behaviours that enhance personal strengths and shield against the adverse effects of stress,” explained Scott McLennan, our National Allied Health Manager.

Scott shares some good news. He believes that with structured coaching and support, anyone can develop resilience, despite natural differences in our capacities.

“Resilience is a learnable and strengthenable skill that not only supports individual growth and adaptation but also enhances collective workplace dynamics,” said Scott.

“It enables individuals and teams to navigate challenges, adapt to changes, and continue progressing towards their goals, thereby fostering a more robust and supportive work environment.”

Every September, we’re encouraged to learn how to start meaningful conversations with people we care about who may be experiencing tough times, especially at work.

However, this year, we’re reminded to ask “R U Ok?” any day of the year. A lot can change in 365 days. By taking simple steps to actively listen and encourage others to seek help, we can support those around us.
