The One Common Mistake That Can Raise Red Flags For Recruiters During an Interview

Oops, you’ve been red-flagged!

During a job interview, it’s important to avoid certain behaviours that may raise concerns among recruiters.

One common mistake is starting every sentence with “I” or making everything about oneself, which can indicate an egocentric nature.

Former Google Vice President, Claire H. Johnson, has expressed suspicion towards candidates who excessively use the words “I” or “we” during interviews. Here’s why:

  • Overusing “I” may suggest an egocentric personality.
  • Excessive use of “we” could indicate a lack of initiative or an inability to achieve individual success.

“I always watch for two words: Too much ‘I’ is a red flag that they may not be humble or collaborative. Too much ‘we’ may obscure what role they played in the situation. There needs to be a balance,” she said.

Another attribute that raises red flags for recruiters is a lack of self-awareness. Claire believes that this is a valuable trait often overlooked by candidates.

While experience and competence are important, nurturing self-awareness drives motivation for personal growth and improvement.

“Sure, your experience and skills matter, but they can be learned. And when someone is highly self-aware, they’re more motivated to learn because they’re honest about what they need to work on. They also relate better to their colleagues and Managers.”
