From Tragedy to Triumph: Chris Blowes’ Inspiring Journey as a Builder and Champion Surfer

What better way to kick off National Skills Week than by sharing the incredible journey of Chris Blowes? A former apprentice turned successful builder and surf champion, Chris’ story is nothing short of inspiring.

Last month, Chris graced our Mas National Apprentice Connect Provider Conference in Sydney, offering a fresh perspective on overcoming challenges and setbacks. His life took a dramatic turn on Anzac Day 2015 when a shark attack during a surf session with friends left him fighting for his life and ultimately cost him a leg. Despite the odds, his resilience shone through.

“I left school at the end of Year 11 to pursue my apprenticeship as a carpenter. Losing my leg made me question my abilities. But getting back to building and running my own business has given me a renewed sense of purpose. By pushing aside our limiting mindsets, you can achieve anything,” Chris shared.

Re-learning to walk was just the beginning for Chris. He faced numerous challenges, from navigating his disability to mastering the balance needed for climbing ladders and walking on roof trusses. Yet, he viewed each setback as a learning opportunity.

Nearly a decade later, Chris has not only established a thriving building business but also represented Australia at the World Para Surf Championships in California, bringing home a trophy. He’s authored a book and become a sought-after keynote speaker, inspiring others to transform setbacks into numerous possibilities.

Chris also dedicates his time to coaching with Master Builders SA, helping apprentices and professionals in the building and construction industry tackle their own challenges.

We’re immensely grateful to Chris for sharing his motivational story at our conference.
